Day Surgery Postgraduate Programme

This programme doesn’t exist yet — and whether it comes to life depends on you. We’re currently researching demand, and the interest registered on this page is what we’ll use to decide whether to build it.

Register on the right to tell us how you’d like to be involved: as a student ready to study it, a tutor keen to lead it, or a contributor to help write its content. Whichever you choose, we’ll be in touch either way.

Day surgery is an important part of contemporary surgical care. The National Day Surgery Delivery Pack, developed by Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT), the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC), and the British Association of Day Surgery (BADS), identifies day surgery as a major contributor to the future of surgical services and calls for dedicated teams, multidisciplinary working, effective day surgery pathways, and clear training pathways for the future workforce (GIRFT, CPOC and BADS, 2024).

Learna is exploring the development of postgraduate education in Day Surgery and is inviting healthcare professionals working across the multidisciplinary day surgery pathway to help shape what this could become.

As part of our research and development, we are considering areas including:

  • Organisation and delivery of day surgery services
  • Patient selection and preoperative assessment and optimisation
  • Perioperative and anaesthetic approaches to day surgery
  • Discharge planning, patient safety, and unplanned escalation
  • Day surgery nursing, surgery, anaesthesia, and multidisciplinary working
  • Outcome measurement, audit, and quality improvement
  • Digital health, sustainability, and the future development of day surgery services

These areas are still being explored and do not represent a confirmed curriculum or programme structure.

We’re keen to hear from:
Healthcare professionals who may be interested in studying a future Day Surgery course
Experienced practitioners who may be interested in contributing as tutors or educators
Those interested in helping to shape future postgraduate education in Day Surgery

Whichever applies to you, your input can help inform what we develop next. Register your interest to stay involved in the research and development process, share your views on what future Day Surgery education should include, and receive updates as our plans progress.
