Biography

Dr Raman Sakhuja MBBS, MRCPsych, DpM, MBA

Dr Raman Sakhuja is a leading Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in Addiction Medicine and General Adult Psychiatry with a special interest in Neuropsychiatry, Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry and Sleep Disorders. With extensive experience in substance misuse services, he has played a key role in advancing addiction treatment and harm reduction strategies in Wales.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist for Substance Misuse Services at Cwm Taf Health Board, Dr Sakhuja had developed protocols for alcohol use disorder management and led initiatives to improve access to interventions such as Naloxone distribution and role out of Buvidal in the service. He has also chaired clinical governance frameworks, ensuring high standards of care in addiction services. He was the Co- Author of the Framework for Alcohol Related Brain Damage for the Welsh Government. He has previously been the ECT lead in Cwm Taf UHB.

As Programme Leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Addiction Medicine, Dr Sakhuja brings his extensive expertise in psychopharmacology, neuromodulation and an eclectic approach in psychological interventions including CBT-I. His additional training includes Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation at Harvard Medical School and a Certificate in Sleep Medicine , reflecting his holistic approach to addiction treatment.

He has a Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate and remains actively involved in Medico-Legal practice for Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Immigration matters for the Civil Courts. He is an assessor for Expert Witness reports for the Expert Witness Institute, UK.

In addition to his clinical, medico-legal and academic roles, Dr Sakhuja has held leadership positions, including Chair of Clinical Governance for local drug and alcohol services and former Chair of the Faculty of Addictions & General Adult Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Wales. His work continues to shape addiction treatment and education, ensuring future practitioners are equipped with evidence-based skills.
